This political cartoon is focusing on the issue of Panama Canal. This cartoon is showing the Panama republic bursting out of its rule by Columbia and giving USA the permission of building Panama Canal. It is also showing how American investors were intrigued to see the outcome of a part of Panama Republic landing on our hands and how President Roosevelt standing on the other side waiting for the permission to start digging. Other people might think that the American investors are causing the Panama Republic to burst because of their intrigue. Some people can also think that President Roosevelt sent the American investors to the other side in order to get Panama Republic out of its shell. I see symbolism in this cartoon where the chick is coming out of its shell. The chick is showing how young Panama Republic is and the broken shell is showing Columbia has lost part of its territory. This cartoon is also showing labeling. It is showing labeling by letting us know that the shell is Columbia, chick is Panama Republic, the papers are permission for the building of Panama canal and who the people are. This cartoon supports my position of American Imperialism by showing that America got its hands on a part of Panama where we needed to build the Panama Canal.
