Spanish American War 2

 Bill of Fare, 1901

This political cartoon focuses on the issue of Spanish American war. The cartoonist is trying to show us how President McKinley is ready to serve Uncle Sam anything from the Bill of Fare. The Bill of Fare consists of the countries such as Cuba, Puerto Rico and Philippines. Some other people might also infer how Uncle Sam doesn't know which country to capture or order first because all of them are very resourceful and useful. I see the cartoonist use analogy where the Bill of Fare acts as a meal menu, President McKinley as a server to get the countries and Uncle Sam as the customer. I also see labeling where each country is labelled in a unique way on the Bill of Fare as meals and President McKinley towel is labelled as his name. This supports my position on American Imperialism by showing how Uncle Sam or America is ready to take on any Spanish country without any problem just like ordering a piece of cake.

Spanish American War

This political cartoon focuses on the issue of the Spanish American war. The cartoonist is showing Uncle Sam as a circus player using the little men as his 'Props'. It is showing how Uncle Sam is training different countries to stay under control. It is also showing Uncle Sam choosing these people representing countries from the army or navy by standing on a podium saying ARMY and NAVY. Other people can also infer that the people on top (Puerto Rico & Cuba) are more experienced that the people in Uncle Sams hand (Philippines). Some techniques that I see are exaggeration and labeling. Exaggeration is being shown where Uncle Sam is appealing above the people representing countries at the bottom. It is showing how America more successful than others. I see labeling where flags are labelled with country names and podium with 'Army and Navy'. This supports my idea on American Imperialism by showing Uncle Sam having the control of these Spanish countries.

Purchase of Alaska

Seward's Icebox Cartoon - Seward's Folly

This political cartoon focuses on the issue of the Purchase of Alaska. The cartoonist is trying to show us how Seward and the Russian minister of the United States are carrying a big chunk of ice. Also in background you can see the Russians carrying money that United States gave for Alaska. Some people can also make an inference about the trolley labelled "Treaty". They can say that Seward already had the trolley prepared showing his intentions or plans. I see the cartoonist used labeling by labeling the trolley TREATY and the big iceberg as RUSSIAN AMERICA. I also see symbolism in iceberg. the iceberg symbolizes whole Alaska. It is even depicting Seward's Folly by just appealing a big piece of ice. This supports my idea on American Imperialism by showing that buying Alaska was useless because all we got was ice, glaciers and limited resource of oil.

Annexation Of Hawaii

Picture

This political cartoon is on the issue of the annexation of Hawaii. The cartoonist is trying to show us how queen Liliuokalani and Uncle Sam are balancing on a cane of sugar. It is also showing us that Hawaiian farmers are on Uncle Sams side. Other people can also infer that Uncle Sam side is going down showing that if Uncle Sam and Hawaiian farmers get off, Queen Liliuokalani will go down. The cartoonist use symbolism in the balance scale over the sugar barrel because its showing us how these two sides are balancing over the Sugar and which side is stronger by showing Uncle Sam and the Hawaiian farmers heavier or at the bottom of balancing scale. I also see exaggeration in this cartoon. I see exaggeration where Uncle Sam is looking taller and superior than queen Liliuokalani. This idea supports my position on American Imperialism by showing how both sides were fighting over sugar and that Hawaiian farmers supported America.

Open Door Policy

This political cartoon focuses on issue of Open Door Policy. The cartoonist is trying to show us how the European countries are splitting up China into separate pieces to take. It is also showing how China is trying to stop them. Other people can also infer that some countries are thinking first about taking their part and some going head and taking the step immediately. I see the cartoonist use analogy where China is being displayed as big pizza and different countries fighting over how much to have or give to each country. I also see irony because I expected all countries to have a knife in their hand ready to take away their part of China but, some countries are waiting showing that there was conflict even after some countries were done choosing and it was time for the countries who were thinking to take action. This cartoon supports my position on American Imperialism by showing that after China opened for trade, European countries pounds on China for resources and trade.

Roosevelt Corollary

File:Monroe doctrine.jpg

This political cartoon is on the issue of Roosevelt Corollary. The Cartoonist is trying to show how the eastern and the western hemisphere is separated due to the Monroe Doctrine. It is also showing Uncle Sam standing on the west hemisphere with control over the countries on his side and the European countries standing in eastern hemisphere with their side to control. Other people can also infer that the western hemisphere appears big and that it is coming first in a way by leaving the eastern hemisphere behind. Some of the technique I notice are analogy and labeling. I see analogy where more land and people representing different countries on one side and Uncle Sam standing on other side with smaller amount of land. I also noticed labeling where the western hemisphere and the Monroe Doctrine is labeled. This supports my opinion on American Imperialism by showing that the Monroe Doctrine separated the two hemisphere apart giving America an opportunity to cease control over small island with no interference.

Panama Canal Two

Image result for panama canal political cartoon

This political cartoon states the issue on the building of the Panama Canal. The cartoonists message on this political cartoon is that Roosevelt is making way for the ships to pass and along with that dumping all of the land that was dug out from the earth in Bogota. Other people can also say that Roosevelt is helping to create a new treaty because of a soldier is carrying up a flag of new treaty. The cartoonist used exaggeration by showing Roosevelt very big. It also shows that he is capable of huge possibilities. Another technique could be irony where I expected the land around Roosevelt to look smaller. I thing because Panama was probably the smallest or thinnest isthmus in the world. This supports my idea of American Imperialism by showing that Roosevelt did a great job and put in a lot of efforts in building the Panama Canal and creating a new treaty.
